The Beginning of St. Anne’s Church

Although the cornerstone for St. Anne’s Episcopal Chapel was laid in June 1873, St. Anne’s did not become a parish until 1897. The rectory was built in 1926; the parish house acquired in 1966.

St. Anne’s is named for Anne, mother of Mary and grandmother of our Lord Jesus; however, our name probably was chosen with our benefactress, Mrs. Ann Hoye Bishop, in mind. The Bishop family was instrumental in the building of St. Anne’s Church.

In the spring of 2001, our Suffragan Bishop, The Rev. John L. Rabb, gifted us with the St. Anne’s rosebush which is planted on the driveway side of the church. It symbolizes his vision for St. Anne’s – that of a vibrant congregation which is to grow & blossom in Smithsburg.
